@skillyskally @mtracey Sure but it's not like we're lacking for potential suspects. Personally my guess is poland or Ukraine or other EE countries are involved.

@skillyskally @mtracey No I'm suggesting that it could be a number of actors, from Poland to Ukraine to the US to a non-govt actor or rogue agents in any govt. I honestly don't know because it doesn't seem to me to benefit anyone very much in real terms.

@skillyskally @mtracey Ukraine has historically for long periods been part of Russia. Russia has often been unfriendly to the idea of a Ukrainian nation. Many Ukrainians blame the USSRs mistreatment on Russia, however fair that is. And I think the recent history is indeed relevant - Ukr

@skillyskally @mtracey I'm not saying it is, but it takes Ukraine too deep into NATO's sphere. Yeah, Russia was deeply integrated with a lot of NATO members.

@skillyskally @mtracey I'm not saying it is, but it takes Ukraine too deep into NATO's sphere for Russia, clearly. Why did they annex Crimea and send troops into Donbas after euromaidan? Just offended that anti-Russia people came into power thru what they called a coup? Or did west-facing Ukraine

@skillyskally @mtracey I'm not saying it is, but it takes Ukraine to deep into NATO's sphere for Russia, clearly. And Germany is part of NATO. Integral to it.

@skillyskally @mtracey Nato is obviously a factor but my point is that it wasn't the only one and even without it Russia would not find it acceptable for Ukraine to be part of the EU and not friendly to Russia. Does anyone doubt before 2022 that Finland was on the EU's side if it ever came to a war?

@skillyskally @mtracey Not saying we should I'm saying that a Ukraine that is part of the EU is by necessity already too tightly integrated with Russia's rivals even if it has on paper neutrality + the EU has a defence component - very limited right now but it's possible (probable?) that it will grow

@skillyskally @mtracey Well, he's done it before, it has worked out pretty well for him. If his assumption was that Ukraine would fold quickly, then he could have easily figured that he could present the world a fait accompli and bet that he could outlast the initial anger.

@skillyskally @mtracey Well, he's done it before, it has worked out pretty well for him. If his assumption was that Ukraine would fold quickly, then he could have easily figured that he could present a fair accompli and say "are you really gonna cut yourselves off from cheap gas over a done deal"?
